Lazy Sunday: Week in Review 7/28/13

In case you missed anything this week . . .

My Blog Posts

Are the weeks going by faster and faster all of a sudden? Seriously, how is this the last Sunday in July? I kinda feel like I’m in the Spy Kids 3 movie. (If you’ve seen it, you know what I’m talking about. If not, I give you full permission to laugh at the fact that I have actually watched Spy Kids 3. Many, many, many times. Many.) Anyhoo . . .

On Monday I wrote about my idea for a new Discovery Channel reality show, Alone with Kids and Afraid, based on their new series Naked and Afraid. You strand one single adult with 2-3 children and see how he or she survives everyday parenting challenges. I for one would love to see how people would do. And nudity isn’t required, but let’s face it, it’s highly likely with kids, right?

For this week’s Too Tired to Try Tuesday post I shared Mommy Needs a Martini’s dry sparkle snow craft. This one is sure to be a hit with the kiddos. Messy, but fun!

On Thursday I wrote about my ongoing journey with the Orange Rhino Challenge. In this update I have a huge confession to make about how things have been going.

As always, I shared some adorableness in this week’s Shiny, Happy, Sparkly, Feel-Good Friday post. I’m so happy many of you have started sharing your own photos with us. Please keep them coming!

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Sunday: “When can we stay over at Gramma and Pop’s again?” asked my favorite today.
  • Monday: “When does kindergarten start?” asked my favorite today.
  • Tuesday: “Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma,” said my favorite today. (Hey, it’s only been a few weeks hearing this little chatter. Give me a few more before I’m complaining about it driving me bonkers.)
  • Wednesday: “I wanna watch t.v. on the man,” said my favorite today. (Good thing I knew she meant “on Demand,” lol.)
  • Thursday: “Shhhh, I’m twying to wead to my baby brudder,” said my favorite today.
  • Friday: “What?! Where did all this fur on my legs come from?!!” asked my favorite today.
  • Saturday: “I’m ready for night-night,” said my favorite today.

Lazy Sunday: Week in Review 7/21/13

In case you missed anything this week . . .

My Blog Posts

Gosh this past week went by fast. Seems like just yesterday when I published last week’s Lazy Sunday.

On Monday I republished a post that I originally wrote for my friend Michelle at Miss Banana Pants titled “My Husband Put a Ring on It, and then a Firefighter Cut it Off” (aka, “The Best Things in Life Aren’t Things”). I learned a lot from this embarrassing incident, and needed a bit of a reminder.

And this week’s Too Tired to Try Tuesday post might be my favorite of all time. Not necessarily because of the subject — although who wouldn’t love ice cream pizza?! — but because of the author! The post I shared was “written” by 5 1/2-year-old Ben, my friend Karyn’s son from PicklesINK. Ben is clearly a culinary master, and if you haven’t already, I bet he’d love to hear how awesome you think his post is! 🙂

On Wednesday, I abandoned a post I was struggling to write (placing it in my draft folder with 6 or 7 other posts) and spur-of-the-momenty decided I wanted to start an interview series — aptly titled “That’s What She (or He) Said” — with other writers to share all of the talent I have found over the past few months. But the interview questions I’m selecting are not your run of the mill questions. Nope, they’re completely wacky! And first up to share with us was Molley from A Mother Life. Can’t wait for the next installment.

And we wrapped up the week with a Shiny, Happy, Sparkly, Feel-Good Friday post that was just overflowing with ooey gooey cuteness! For serious, if you didn’t have a chance to see it, you should check it out.

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Sunday: “I miss you, Sissy. I wub you,” said my favorite today (saying goodnight to his sister over the phone during their first night ever sleeping apart from each other).
  • Monday: “Mamma, your insides are pretty,” said my favorite today. (I really hope this means what I think it means and not a creepy alternative!)
  • Tuesday: “I fink you need a nap, Mommy,” said my favorite today. (He just really gets me, this one.)
  • Wednesday: “You’re so comfy, Mamma,” said my favorite today.
  • Thursday: “Wow, my butt is really crackin,” said my favorite today. (I have no idea what that meant, but it made me spit out my drink.)
  • Friday: “Let’s sleep a lot tomorrow morning,” said my favorite today. (Yes, please!)
  • Saturday: “Muah, muah, muah,” said my favorite today as he gave me his first kissies ever. (Ok, it was more like slobbery licks, but still!)

Here are a few other blogs and other posts that I really enjoyed this week:

  • David Vienna from The Daddy Complex shared a new parenting trend on HuffPost Parents that I really need to practice: The CTFD Method. (I think we all could benefit from this!)
  • If you’ve had a kid that used a pacifier, you’re going to love Mama, Schmama’s “The Rule of the Paci” (“4. Do not speak the name “paci” unless you can deliver. Immediately.” It’s true!)
  • This dad’s video that’s gone viral showing 1 second from every day of his son’s first year. Absolutely amazing! (And totally worth the 6 1/2 minutes to watch it.)
  • From Celeste at RunningNekkid: First Days (It’s amazing how much some time can change how you view things.)
  • From Amanda at Questionable Choices in Parenting: Terrible Twos are No Big Deal and Other Lies I Tell Myself (I’m on board for the rehab facility because if two are terrible, threes are totally terrible.)
  • Kerry from HouseTalkN was over on In The Powder Room talking about phrases that dive her insane. (What’s on your list? Currently, I can’t stand the phrase “just sayin'” — I have never in my life uttered those words except to say how much I hate when people say that.)

There you have it. Just another week with the wild things.

My Blog Posts

If you’re wondering how long I can blame the move for my lack of writing these days, you’re in good company. I just can’t seem to get back into the swing of things. Hopefully my writer’s brain will kick back in soon.

On Monday I shared some things with you that I really dig about my husband. Not the standard “he’s a great dad” or “he’s my best friend,” but the things he does for me every day that remind me how we ended up on this journey together in the first place.

For this week’s Too Tired to Try Tuesday post, I shared a fun colored rice sensory activity. If you don’t mind a little rice here and there, this one is sure to please and keep the kiddos entertained for more than 5 minutes.

On Thursday, Scary Mommy ran my “Things You Know but Don’t Really Know Until You Have Kids” series. I was super excited for all of the wonderful feedback I received on it and all of the shares!

As always, I finished the week with our Shiny, Happy, Sparkly, Feel-Good Friday post. Thanks so much to everyone who submitted something. If you’re interested in sharing with us, please do send a pic or story my way. We can always use more happy!

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Sunday: “Mommy, I love you like a cookie,” said my favorite today.
  • Monday: Me: “Whatchya doing in there, sweetie?”
My favorite today: “Making my dinner.”
    Winning!
  • Tuesday: “Mommy, my feets is soooo dirty. I played good today,” said my favorite today.
  • Wednesday: “Mamma, when I grow up I want to be you,” said my favorite today.
  • Thursday: “Why are you so smart?” asked my favorite today.
  • Friday: “All done,” signed my favorite today. (For the very first time!)
  • Saturday: “Mommy, how did I get this family?” asked my favorite today. (AKA the birth of a question that lasts a lifetime, sweetie.)  😉

Lazy Sunday: Week in Review 7/7/13

In case you missed anything this week . . .

My Blog Posts

Still a little slow this week as we continue to get settled in the new house. Plus, my husband started his new job this week, and I have the kids home with me all day, every day. Needless to say, my mind is still a little mushy.

For this week’s Too Tired to Try Tuesday post, I continued the patriotic theme from last week and shared a 4th of July cake recipe that I actually tried out a few years ago. I didn’t make it this year, but as I sit here and type this with no leftover cake to eat, I’m wishing I had.

And Wednesday was a big day around here. My littlest turned 1! To celebrate, I shared his birth story. I can’t believe how fast this past year has flown by. Yet again, it seems like the little guy has been a part of our family forever.

I rounded out the week with the Shiny, Happy, Sparkly, Feel-Good Friday post. It included an awesome picture of my husband — who’s allergic to bees — suited up ninja-style in order to spray down a wasp nest in our backyard (that’s true love, no?) and some great shots of the baby digging into his first birthday cake, among others. If you need a smile, I highly suggest you checking it out.

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Sunday: “Anything for you my sweet mommy,” said my favorite today. (Sweet indeed. I just wish we had the same definition of “anything.”)
  • Monday: Today my favorites squealed at the top of their lungs for a good 30+ minutes when we let them take a bath in our jacuzzi tub. (Another perk of the new house!)
  • Tuesday: “Thank you for this wonderful meal,” said my favorites today. (Man, if they think a cinnamon raisin bagel and apple sauce is a “wonderful meal” they’re going to grow up thinking I am a culinary genius!)
  • Wednesday: “Mmmmm, nyum, nyum, nyum,” said my favorite today, digging into his first birthday cake!
  • Thursday: “Happy birfday ‘Merica,” said my favorite today. Followed immediately by, “Mamma, who’s ‘Merica?”
  • Friday: “Can we please just be nice to each other?” asked my favorite today exasperatedly.
  • Saturday: “Whoa, nice butt,” said my favorite (random younger guy) today as I was loading the groceries into my minivan. Presumably he was slightly inebriated. And had a vision impairment. Meh, I’ll take it. 😉

Lazy Sunday: Week in Review 6/30/13

So, I’ve slowly eased back into the blogosphere after my 2-week moving hiatus. In case you missed anything the past few weeks . . .

My Blog Posts

Ok, well, the majority of posts over the past few weeks have actually not been my own. While I was getting my move on, I had some awesome guest bloggers taking over my site:

When I finally returned to writing for this week’s Too Tired to Try Tuesday post, I shared a post I wrote for Kids Crafts Fun and Games.com the day before. In this post I chronicled how the kids and I made handprint fireworks t-shirts. It was pretty fun, but extremely messy, so be warned if you’re interested in trying it out.

On Wednesday I dropped a little knowledge on you that I acquired from my move in Some Things I Learned During Our Move from CT to VA. Like the fact that there is an actual place in Pennsylvania called Shartlesville. For serious.

And I was clearly still suffering from moving brain at the end of last week because I totally forgot to ask you wonderful people for submissions for Friday’s Shiny, Happy, Sparkly, Feel-Good Friday post. Don’t fret, I filled it with pictures of my cuties, and I’ll be sure to remember to put out the call for next week. Unless I forget. And then, please, someone remind me.

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Monday: “I weally wike our new house,” said my favorite today.
  • Tuesday: “I don’t want to leave, I loooooove the library,” whined my favorite today. (It was really hard to stand my ground on this one.)
  • Wednesday: “When is it bedtime?” asked my favorite today.
  • Thursday: “How come our new house makes me sleep longer?” asked my favorite today? (Because it has magical powers. And apparently we can never move again.)
  • Friday: “I didn’t know poop came in that color!” shrieked my favorite today. (No fears, it was the baby’s.)
  • Saturday: “Just call me ‘boss,'” said my favorite today.

Lazy Sunday: Week in Review 6/9/13

Before I get into the weekly wrap up, I need to share a little programming note. I am going to be on a blogging hiatus the next two weeks as my family and I prepare to and actually move. (We’re moving from CT to VA.) I know, I know, I’ll miss you, too! The good news is that I have lined up 6 fun guest bloggers to keep you company while I’m busy dealing with moving stuff. Plus I’ll continue to update my Facebook page, so I won’t be completely out of touch. 🙂

Ok, so, without further adieu, on with the weekly wrap up.

In case you missed anything this week . . .

My Blog Posts

On Monday I shared a product review of my newest love: The Knot Genie. Oh man, I wasn’t asked to write this review, nor did I receive any sort of compensation for this review, but I love the product so much, I wanted to let you know. If you or your little one has unruly hair that’s hard to keep tangle-free, you should definitely check it out.

In this week’s Too Tired to Try Tuesday post I shared a Muddy Buddies recipe that I found on Mess For Less. If your kid likes chocolate and peanut butter, and making a mess, this one is sure to please. (I also linked to a recipe for Chocolate Snowballs in case of any nut allergies.)

On Wednesday I posted about simple pleasures I now have as a mom. And this graphic was quite a hit!

simple pleasures

I received a very nice surprise on Thursday when I was contacted by an editor at The Huffington Post letting me know that they were publishing my post from last week on redefining success. To say I was excited and proud would be an understatement.

And, as usual, I wrapped up the week with a Shiny, Happy, Sparkly, Feel-Good Friday post. Lots of cute happiness from you all this week. And, only one pic from me. But it was a good one. 🙂

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Sunday: “If we don’t get ice cream, there will be consequences,” said my favorite today. (It’s hard to argue w/ such logic & impressive vocabulary.)
  • Monday: “Daddy, Mommy is the boss,” said my favorite today. (It’s ok, my husband actually tells this to the kids all the time. He knows what’s up.)
  • Tuesday: “I don’t want to watch Caillou,” said my favorite today!
  • Wednesday: “If you need anything, buddy, just ask me, not Mommy,” said my favorite today.
  • Thursday: “Here you go, m’lady,” said my favorite today. (No worries, she learned it from a Barbie movie, not Game of Thrones. Ok, maybe it’s a draw?)
  • Friday: “Let’s do this,” said my favorite today as we were preparing to make a mad dash from the car to the house in the pouring rain.
  • Saturday: “Mommy, I like making craps,” said my favorite today. (Errrr, I assumed he meant “crafts,” but now I’m wondering if maybe I misunderstood.)

  • From Hollow Tree Ventures: As the Dollhouse Turns — Grandpa’s Little Problem (Oh my goodness, if you haven’t checked out the dollhouse soap opera my friend Robyn produces, you are missing out. Please check it out, stat!)

Lazy Sunday: Week in Review 6/2/13

In case you missed anything this week . . .

My Blog Posts

My brain sort of went into overdrive this week after nearly 2 weeks suffering from writer’s block. I published something every day, which is unusual for me.

On Monday I wrote about some of the things you won’t hear us saying in our house. Curse words–at least when the kids aren’t in earshot–and other phrases made the list. It was also nice hearing about your lists as well.

Tuesday’s Too Tired to Try post was all about erupting Kool-Aid paints. These paints promise to be fun and smell good, too! And because you can do this activity in the bathtub, clean up is a breeze.

On Wednesday I wrote a post that had me crying most of the way through as I reflected on my daughter’s birth story and her very unexpected entrance into this world.

After such an emotional post on Wednesday, I got pretty goofy on Thursday and shared with you the 20 reasons I think cats have superior potty skills compared to kids. I received some pretty funny (and accurate) rebuttals to these reasons, so I had to add a disclaimer that the kids in question are toddlers and preschoolers, and the cats in question are not psycho. 🙂

And Friday saw my second-ever double post day. I started out with our Shiny, Happy, Sparkly, Feel-Good Friday post in which I had a record number of submissions! Granted, these were after I begged asked for you to send them in, but you all delivered! And for that I thank you!

My second post was something I wrote on redefining success after I read Arianna Huffington’s post in which she asked for people to share their thoughts on the subject. I actually have a pretty strong opinion on this, so I shared them in a letter I wrote to her. Who knows if she’ll actually see it; I’m just happy I wrote it!

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Sunday: “Wooooohoooooo!” screamed my favorites today as they witnessed their baby brother take his first steps. (Proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQXMpSSyzEg)
  • Monday: “Mamma, can we trade ice cream cones so I can have the small one and you can have the big one?” asked my favorite today. (Yes, yes you can!)
  • Tuesday: “You’re my best friend, Mommy,” said my favorite today. (Hey, I’ll take it while it lasts!)
  • Wednesday: “I’ll really try to sleep later than the sun tomorrow,” said my favorite today.
  • Thursday: “I shake my booty back and forth, I shake my booty back and forth,” sang my favorite today! (Bonus points if you can name the song she adapted this from. Bonus bonus points if you can tell me the movie in which she heard the song from which she adapted this from!)
  • Friday: “If you don’t let me do that I’m going to go in my room and stay there all night,” whined my favorite today. (Ummm, is that a promise?)
  • Saturday: “Nobody went in timeout today!” observed my favorite today. (Mark it in the record books, people. And here’s to a long streak ahead of us!)

Lazy Sunday: Week in Review 5/26/13

In case you missed anything this week . . .

My Blog Posts

It was another slow-ish week for me this week, as I’ve been super busy with work, plus suffering from a major case of writer’s block.

I began the week with an update on how I’m doing with my Orange Rhino Challenge. I’ve made some progress in some areas but taken a step back in another. If you’ve been doing the challenge, how are things going?

This week’s Too Tired to Try Tuesday post was doubly awesome in that it was for a recipe and a craft: peanut butter play dough. Mmmmm.

I also was over at Real Mom of NJ’s place on Tuesday re-sharing my philosophy on the best way to parent. As far as I’m concerned, there’s only one way!

And our Shiny, Happy, Sparkly, Feel-Good Friday post included some dinosaurs playing in Barbie’s house, some cuddling and baby cuteness, and some goofiness sprinkled in, among other things.

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Sunday: Today my favorite called me “Bob” after I tried for 10 mins to get him to call me “mamma” . . . I guess we’re making progress from “dadda,” which is what he usually calls me. (And there’s a video up on my Facebook page documenting this!)
  • Monday: “Mommy, can’t we just go to the bank and get more money?” asked my favorite today. (Oh pumpkin head, how I wish it were that easy!)
  • Tuesday: “Mommy, I wish we could move all of our beds together so that we could just cuddle all night,” said my favorite today. (I’d like that in theory, too, Love.) 🙂
  • Wednesday: “Mommy, I have wots of work to do today. I need to wead all deez books!” said my favorite today!
  • Thursday: “Let’s all look fancy today!” said my favorite today. (Which of course means that I wore jeans instead of my usual yoga-type pants. All day, I might add.)
  • Friday: “Hi-iiiiiii,” said my favorite today as he waved his chubby little hand at me! (It’s his first word! Well, real word, if you don’t count “bob.” Plus he says it in the cutest little southern accent. FYI, we live in CT.)
  • Saturday: “Mommy, dis is unaccep-able,” said my favorite today. (He was not pleased that his hood was bunching up behind him in his carseat. I was pleased, however, to discover he does listen to some things I say!)

Lazy Sunday: Week in Review 5/19/13

In case you missed anything this week . . .

My Blog Posts

I’ve been a slacker. Well, with my blog writing, not with life. With life, things have been super busy around here as we start preparing for our big move in 4 (eeeeek) weeks.

For my Too Tired to Try Tuesday post I suggested the fun and practical craft of trying handpainted sneakers. I think I’m actually going to do this one after we move. And I was so pleased to get so many submissions for this week’s Shiny, Happy, Sparkly, Feel-Good Friday post. From one reader’s trip to visit family to another’s little sweatpea still in the womb, there was a whole lotta happy going on. I smiled a lot. And that made my heart happy.

But two other exciting things happened in terms of writing! (1) An older post of mine in which I dissect the apparent language barrier between me and my children was republished over on I Just Want to Pee Alone on Monday. (2) I shared a post on what I’ve learned about the true meaning of “things” over at my friend Michelle’s page, Miss Banana Pants, as she prepares to move with her family to Nicaragua.

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Sunday: Today my favorites said absolutely nothing to me before 9:30 am when I finally woke up. 🙂
  • Monday: “Do you want me to go back to bed for a little longer?” asked my favorite today. (Yes, love. The answer to this question is always yes!)
  • Tuesday: “Look at my pirate booty,” said my favorite today (as he was rocking a pair of big boy underwear with pirates all over).
  • Wednesday: “I want to make [the baby] feel better. Can I please hold him and sing him a lullaby?” asked my favorite today? (And she sang him right to sleep! *heart completely melted*)
  • Thursday: “Spank Mamma on her bottom,” said my favorite today . . . to my husband . . . who looked at me and then waggled (yes, I just said “waggled”) his eyebrows. (Gotta love when kids say something that means something completely different to adults!) *waggle, waggle*
  • Friday: “Abracadabra, you will stop crying,” said my favorite today. (For the record, it was to the baby. Not me.)
  • Saturday: “Can I take out my table and give away some of my toys to kids that need them?” asked my favorite today (while we were setting up for our yard sale).

Lazy Sunday: Week in Review 5/12/13

Happy Mother’s Day again! Also, I’d like to welcome all the new faces who have joined us over the past few days! Glad to have you here.

Now, in case you missed anything this week . . .

My Blog Posts

I began the week with a letter to my children about their copious amounts of artwork and admitted a secret to them that I’ve been holding in for a while. We’re going to start some method for displaying their art, but we haven’t decided yet on just how we’ll do this. We’re debating between the old refrigerator display method or a few different ideas we found on Pinterest.

For this week’s Too Tired to Try Tuesday post, I shared Around My Family Table’s amazing 1-minute Dixie cup cakes. This may be the easiest cake you’ll ever make. And if you have older kids, they can make it for you!!

Later in the week I wrote about a condition I think all of us parents suffer from: Post-Kid Stress Disorder. But it hasn’t been talked about in the medical literature, so I tried my hand at defining it and created a quiz for you to see if you suffer from it, too.

I wrapped up the week, as usual, with our Shiny, Happy, Feel-Good Friday post. It includes pictures of some snacking dinosaurs, a baby butt sticker, and some puddle jumping, among others. A friendly face from my childhood also makes an appearance.

And I don’t usually post on Sundays, nor did I think I’d have anything to add to the already amazing writing surrounding Mother’s Day, but a post sort of snuck up on me the other day while I was at a Mommy Brunch at my daughter’s preschool. In it you’ll see what 16 singing preschoolers taught me about being a mom.

My Favorite Kid

This week my favorites said:

  • Sunday: “You should go take a bath, Mommy,” said my favorite today. (Even though she said it because my feet were horrendously dirty from my flip flops, not because she thought I could use the quiet relaxation.)
  • Monday: “Mommy, you sit down and I’ll make you dinner,” said my favorite today. (True story. Although my dinner was plastic food.)
  • Tuesday: “Mamma, do you want me to wub your back?” asked my favorite today. (I did, and it was nice. For the whole 2.7 seconds he did it.)
  • Wednesday: “That’s just the way I was made,” said my favorite today (when telling her brother why she doesn’t like vegetables).
  • Thursday: For the double win . . . “I can’t wait for our Mother’s Day frunch at school tomorrow,” and “I’m cleaning for Mother’s Day,” said my favorite today. (For the record, I can’t wait for frunch, either. Also, I hope no one is tallying these favorites quotes because someone just may be pulling ahead.)
  • Friday: “You smell gooooooood, Mamma. It’s because you took a shower,” said my favorite today.
  • Saturday: Me: Please put that pretzel down and come help us clean up. 3 yo: I am cleaning. I’m cleaning up the food. (Touché) And that, my friends, is what my favorite said today.
